Icacos Island in Puerto Rico
Icacos Island is a public island accessible only by water taxi. The island is located off the eastern shore of Puerto Rico. Just a couple of miles off the main land, it is only a 20-30 minute water taxi ride away. On the weekends the island is normally surrounded by boats of visitors looking to have a relaxing day on a beautiful beach. There are no established buildings just beaches and vegetation.....and blue blue water :) Check out our snorkeling map for great Icacos Island snorkeling spots.
Many catamaran snorkel boats make a stop at the Icacos Island to allow passengers to snorkel and swim in the clear blue waters surrounding it. The beautiful, colorful reefs in the surrounding area are home to many different species of tropical fish as well as, turtles, stingrays, nurse sharks, and jellyfish. Even the occasional manatee or dolphin has been seen swimming through the area. |
There used to be a limestone quarry on Icacos Island but that hasn't been functional for many many years. You can still see part of the old building if you go around the south side of the island by boat. On the west side of the island, some of the old limestone rocks have formed some cool reefs and wading pools that make a great spot to relax for a few hours.
There are, of course, many coconut trees on the island and if you're lucky you can find a coconut that has fallen to the ground. Now you just have to get it open! Icacos is also home to a very unique berry called the Icacos Fruit. It has a sweetish, tart flavor and can be used for jams and jellies. |
You will be able to see it all as the waters around Icacos are some of the clearest in the world. If you don’t own a boat there is no worry, you can still make out to Icacos. Our local water taxi boats are available for you to hire to take you out and enjoy the day. They provide the transportation so you can enjoy a peaceful boat ride. Once on the island you can spend the afternoon soaking in the sun on the beach, exploring the land, or wading in the cool, clear water. Icacos is one of the highest ranked beaches in the Caribbean on Trip Advisor. Most people that visit never want to leave!
